As chance would have it, Galoob already had a finished concept “in house” that they called “Robots, Aliens and Monsters”. But, alas, they couldn’t figure out how to sell it.  Along came the Garbage Bag Gang and showed them the way.  Surely the planets were in alignment, and lucky stars shone down upon us that Fateful day.  When  Robots, Aliens and Monsters were tossed into Trash Bags, it was a marriage made in Heaven.

Ironically, what in 1991 might have appropriately implied that the toy industry was selling Garbage, would be seen as the triumphant realization of our  glorious  Green Society today.  Below is a photo of the 36 original figures that I just now found on Ebay.

This marked the end of my involvement with the project. Galoob took over from that point forward.  And what they added was terrific.  Their legal department pointed out that “Garbage Bag Gang” sounded too much like “Garbage Bag Kids”, a property that satirized the “Cabbage Patch Kids” with mixed success, and complex legal complications. So Galoob changed the name to “TRASH BAG BUNCH” instead.
Next Galoob replaced the indestructible “real” garbage bags with others that dissolved in water, eliminating the need for a water-soluble  inner pouch, printed to look like garbage.  Last of all they added an ingenious touch, an Alka Seltzer like effervescent tablet that fizzed dramatically when dropped in water.  These clever changes made all the difference, and added up to an Winning Combination.
Last of all, Galoob hired a fabulous, and now famous, artist, Daryl Cagle, to add his magic to the package. And TRASH BAG BUNCH was off and running.
